Although all the musicians involved in Tuesday night’s UnderCover Presents: Pixies’ Doolittle show at Public Works SF were incredibly competent and even, dare we say, talented, time and again the majority chose to stray too far from the original elements that make Doolittle the modern classic that it is. more than anything else, the real beauty of the Pixies was their simplicity. no overblown production, just well written songs performed by an incredible group of musicians.
The covers presented on Tuesday night seemed to be trying to marry these simple tunes with a mash up mentality. What would this song sound like if performed by Fela Kuti or Tom Waits? How would a 4AD artist interpret this album? all this is well and good, but for someone who just wants to hear some of their favorite songs performed, it’s too overwhelming. A couple of the bands re-worked the songs so much that they were completely unrecognizable as Pixies tunes. Not good.
The next event in this series is a performance of Prince’s Purple Rain, taking place on June 7, Prince’s birthday. even though the Pixies show was a bit of a let down, we’re looking forward to seeing what San Francisco musicians do with this landmark album. are we going to let the elevator bring us down? Don’t know, but we’ll still go.
It came out in '06, and I want to show my girlfriend the thing when Barney described Marshall's high-five as a lazy cat. But I can't find the video online.
Any sites that have the video/clip?
Thanks!

iPad eBooks For kids – Ipad ebooks for kids can do wonders for the imagination and are excellent for stimulating creativity.
In many ways the iPad seems like it was made for this new generation of kids. The iPad’s larger screen is easier for little hands to manipulate than an iPod touch or similarly-sized smartphone. The iPad’s full-color screen and fast processor is ready to handle the type of brightly colored, interactive apps marketed for children. As a multi-purpose toy, apps can turn the iPad into a story book, coloring book, educational player, gaming system, cartoon delivery network, or so much more.
Want to know what sets the iPad apart from other mobile book readers, like Amazon’s Kindle? It’s the iPad’s ability to vividly capture colorful scenery and stunning lifelike pictures. Reading ebooks on the iPad for kids can be as simple as touching the screen or a layered experience filled with features and new adventures. This is because the iPad supports many ebook “extras” such as video downloads and publishers are getting creative in their attempts to lure new readers.
Text comes to life much more effectively than on any other devices. This is as true for ebooks as it is for the new style of interactive newspaper that is becoming popular with readers of apps like the Wall Street Journal or new York Times. If you love books the way I do, then you’ll love reading on the iPad. The tablet mimics and enhances the tactile “feel” of reading.
If you’re looking for quality iPad ebooks for kids either to read with your kids or just for your own enjoyment, you can’t go wrong with the new iPad. If you ask me, the iPad’s ability as an e-book reader lies not in pulp literature, but in kids’ books. Think about it: the latest Grisham novel is just raw text, which any old Kindle can deliver. But children’s books are all about big, splashy pictures and wild colors–elements perfectly suited to iPad screens.

Many children in the US are prepared to read e-books and would read more for fun if they could get hold of them. Parents observe the impending in technology to initiate books to children through e-readers, computers and tablets. Kids find it “more fun” if books were available on iPad.
A whole new breed of iPad ebooks fir kids is being designed especially for kids that can be read or played on the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. This new type of kid’s app is described as the world’s first touch-enabled and interactive read-along storybook.
Here are the top 5 ebooks for iPad kids:
1.”Alice for the iPad” This lavishly illustrated 52-page abridgment of the classic tale incorporates animation like no other e-book to date. Readers can tilt the iPad to make Alice grow and shrink; shake it to watch the Mad Hatter’s bobblehead bobble; and so on. The frantically paced demo video (above) is a little over-the-top, but there’s no question this is a showpiece iPad app.
2. Dr. Seuss books already among my favorites (uh, I mean, my kids’ favorites) on the iPhone, Oceanhouse Media’s three Seuss titles–”Dr. Seuss’ ABC,” “The Cat in the Hat,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”–are just that much bigger and better on the iPad. oh, and stay tuned: one of my all-time favorite Seuss titles, “The Lorax,” will make its iPad/iPhone debut in about a week.
3. “Jack and the Beanstalk Children’s Interactive Storybook” I think the title says it all, no? The “interactive” part comes in the form of games, activities, hidden Easter eggs, and the like. gorgeous artwork, read-along text. What’s not to like?
4. “Toy Story Read-Along” The model for how children’s e-books should be done, Disney’s highly interactive app leverages the iPad’s potential like few others. Not only does it read the story out loud, it also allows your child to record his or her voice and become the narrator. Each animated page features tap-to-play sound effects and character voices, and some can morph into coloring pages, complete with simple onscreen coloring tools. Songs, movie clips, and mini games round out the experience.
5. “The wrong Side of the Bed in 3D” This is interesting. Children’s book author-illustrator Wallace E. Keller founded See here Studios, turned his own out-of-print title into an e-book, and gave it a 3D makeover. (Narration and musical accompaniment, too.) Any traditional red/cyan 3D glasses will do , though don’t expect “Avatar”-level imagery: the effect is fairly minimal. do expect a cute little story (which can also be viewed in 2D) accompanied by lovely illustrations

This is probably one of the most important issues facing America today. Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican, contact your senators who represent the us to voice your opinion if you are for or against this upcoming bill. what they are not telling us is HOW ARE WE GOING TO PAY FOR THIS HEALTH CARE ? Are they going to raise our taxes, cut money from other programs, such as Medicare, Is this government health care going to cover illegal aliens? without getting the fact straight, and even if they tell us what we want to hear, they will do what they want later….THIS WILL BE A MESS with so many hands in the cookie jar.
Everyone should seriously look into the proposed bill, and decide for themselves if this Health Care Reform Bill is right for you and our country. WE all should be well informed and know exactly what we are getting into because in the long run, there will be no turning back. Here's a link with some info pertaining to what is written in the proposed bill…. lets read most of if not all of the the health care bill, unlike the 787 Billion dollar taxpayer stimulus that was passed overnight pulling a fast one on all of us for a so-called economic recovery package. The stimulus bill is nothing more than government pet pork project careless taxpayer spending to build bigger government so we can be controlled even better…. read some of it if you don't believe me…..and look where our money is going….. www.readthestimulus.org
Personally, I don't want Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Barney Frank or the rest of these nitwits doing anything for me….
This video clip is HARRY REID trying to convince you that TAXES ARE VOLUNTARY…. he is such a manipulating double talking liar….. LOOK at him….. do you trust this guy ? I don't…. he's a con man, a typical poltician with no regard to human life or care or consideration for people….. HE WILL BE VOTED OUT OF OFFICE……….
I JUST WANT THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT TO STAY OUT OF OUR BUSINESS, ALTOGETHER.
Yes, I do. we had to watch while Bush violated a dozen treaties, so just sit back and let us actually do some GOOD for this country.
that's perfect. obama is a sharp man he knows that by this action help the poor people
I am involved in two manadory programs the government runs, the first is social security that the congress has pirated for years and claims it is broke. of course it is they stole it all for pet projects so they would get votes. they need to put the money back they stole. the second is medicare, that we pay while working and then have it again taken from our social security checks. these are manatory programs that are taken out of your checks before you ever see it. they have abused both to the point of bankrupcy. does anyone really want them to expand or creat new ones? the only ones congress will help is the greedy and the ones that are hurt are the workers. they pay the bills. congress needs to be given a lesson on who is their employer. it is not the non tax paying citizen , it is the worker paying the dang taxes.
I enjoy standing in line at the post office and at the social security office. I think the madness at the DMV is great, as well as the cheerful people that help me out at the IRS. I can't wait to sign up for government health care… Please, tax me more so that lazy *** people can be insured, or for the young kids who don't care enough to buy their own coverage…having mojitos, i-phones, and a flat screen is much more important than spending that money on health care. I take care of my own family ~ might as well help everyone else too. Medicaid and Medicare isn't good enough? Blame the government. It's a friggin' crock of s**** to think that the government can run anything without totally screwing it up. How about MAKING the health care companies charge less for premiums? How about MAKING them cover people with preexisting conditions? After all, it's the US government…do they not have the ability to do that?? of course they do. It's about money and power; they could care less about our health.
Actually, from what I understand, everyone will be responsible for paying up to 11% of their income for health coverage. what this means is that the people who can afford to pay a little more will be picking up the tab for others.
I do agree that the people that you named are all nitwits. I was listening to Barney Frank ranting and raving about the credit card mess that they passed and how credit card companies are doing last minute changes to their cards before the law goes into effect so that they can reduce their risk exposure.

The Quinte Film Alternative’s director and programmer, Lynn Braun, hopes that Loyalist College students will come out to see Barney’s Version this Wednesday at the Empire Theatre.
Braun is expecting over 400 people between the two showings of the movie, and hopes that Loyalist students will take advantage of their student discount and experience a film that Braun herself absolutely loved.
Produced by Robert Lantos and directed by Richard J. Lewis, Barney’s Version has already won a Golden Globe and is nominated for several awards, including an Oscar
Barney’s Version is a personal and intimate account of one man’s sporadically conducted life. told over three decades, the movie is an in-depth look into Barney Panofsky’s life as a headstrong television producer and, after three marriages, an unsuspecting romantic.
Barney’s Version is a character-driven film, and its success relies heavily on the main character, and how actor Paul Giamatti executes his role as the quirky Barney.
The Quinte Film Alternative, based in Belleville, is a film venue that usually features more ‘underground films’– those that commonly do not involve big box office players and may not make it to the major screens. Because many theatres want to play it safe for business, well-known producers and famous stars are the usual choice. Formed in 1995 by a small group of local movie lovers, the QFA, with the support of the Quinte Arts Council, took off and received great response from the community.
Programmers go to the film festivals in Toronto and Sudbury and then, after watching the movies, decide which they want to show. Braun says the Quinte Film Alternative requested Barney’s Version before Christmas and was lucky enough to secure the film.
Everyone is welcome. The movie is a perfect escape from the dreary February weather and this light-hearted adaptation of Mordecai Richler’s novel is bound to lighten your spirits.
“Barney’s Version would be a great film to come out and see not only because it brings to the screen an adaptation of an iconic Canadian novel by renowned author Mordecai Richler,” says Braun, “but it is brilliantly produced and acted, has a great cast including Paul Giamatti (Golden Globe winner), Dustin Hoffman, Minnie Driver and Rosamund Pike.”
Barney’s Version plays at Belleville’s Empire Theatre, located at 323 St. Front Belleville on Wednesday. The matinee begins at 2 p.m. and the second showing is at 7:30 the same night. Student price is $5.50 per person, with a Loyalist student card.
